My Super Reader Task

This is my Super Readers task, first I had to choose a book, then I chose four of the tasks to do. I really liked drawing option 1, option 2 and option 5.
I am a Super Reader!

Choose the book of your choice! Fiction or non-fiction. Put title and author below.
Title: Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters. Author: Rick Riordan.

Choose 4 of the following 7 tasks about your book!

Option 1
Draw a character sketch for the main character in your book.

Option 2:yes
Create a map that shows all the important places in your book.

Option 3:
Create a reading comprehension quiz for your book.

Option 4:
Five favourite words - choose five interesting words from the book. Write the sentence in which each word is used and the meaning of the word.

Option 5:yes
Visualising - draw a picture of your favourite scene in the book.
I wanted to do a scene of Percy uncapping Rip-tide/Anaklusmos into the metal bull’s mouth but I couldn't do that.  :(
Option 6:
Advertisement - create an advertisement that persuades people to read your book.

Option 7:yes
Summarising - write a quick summary of your book.

These books are a series about a boy called Percy Jackson who finds out he’s a ‘half-blood/hero/demigod’ whatever you want to call them. He gets himself into deep trouble at school and him, his friend, Grover and his mum make their way to some place called Camp Half-Blood. Unfortunately right in front of the boundary they get attacked by a Minotaur. The Minotaur makes his mother disappear. He goes to camp and ends up finding out his father is Poseidon, going on a quest to rescue his mother from the clutches of Hades and to stop his father and Zeus from having a war just in time.

In the following books he carries on saving Mount Olympus, Camp Half-Blood and the earth from dangerous monsters who work for Kronos and Luke (Percy’s sworn enemy).

Going to Singapore.

About 7.00 in the morning.

We had just arrived in Auckland a few hours ago and we were about to go on a plane to Singapore-our first big flight. My mum and I were going to Germany to see family with some friends who had four children, we were almost halfway there.

8.00
A voice came on a speaker somewhere and the TV in front of us showing the flights suddenly changed. Oh good, under our flight it said ‘boarding’ we stood up and made our way to the tunnel thing that could connect to the plane. Me and Felix were racing ahead, I was partly to watch over him and partly just because it was actually quite fun. Hey, there were Louisa and Emily catching up, I slowed down for them. “Are you excited?” I asked them “Yes” came both of their replies. “Well, I’m kind of scared too” Emily added. ‘Felix, come back” I called as we turned a corner and he appeared to view. He stopped and waited.

A few minutes later.
We finally got to the end of the tunnel and there was a big queue to get in the plane, I was dying to get my bag off of my back and sit down in one of their comfy seats. I sighed we were only taking one step every hour (well that’s how it seemed to me). After a while we found our seats which luckily were close together. It went: Felix by the window seat, me in the middle, Mum by me, Louisa across from us, then Dani, and Emily The first thing Felix saw was SCREEN!
“How do you turn it on?” Felix asked me,
“Just wait, they don’t turn on until the plane starts” I told him.

Another couple of minutes later.
After a long wait the plane finally started moving, this was my favourite part! I love the feeling of losing my stomach when the plane lurches up into the air. We were gaining speed down the runway, Felix and I were watching out the window as the airport whizzed past. Suddenly, with a jolt, the plane lifted off of the runway.

After about half an hour.
The plane had finally settled in the air and now we weren’t flying upwards anymore, the screens started obeying our commands so I helped Felix get control over his.

Some hours later.
Felix had found a really cool racing game, then I found a way to join our games together so we were racing one another nonstop (he was better than I expected).
We both got quite tired from slamming buttons down on the remote control thing, desperate to beat each other, and ended up dozing off.

5.00 at night.
I had slept longer than I had expected but now the waitresses were coming around with food so I didn’t want to go back to sleep anyway. Felix woke up beside me, he yawned and stretched in his seat I checked the window,
“WOW!” I said to myself there were so many little buildings everywhere.

Ten minutes later.
The food turned out to be gross, I actually expected that because I find aeroplane food disgusting. I ended up eating only my bread with jam on and Mum’s bread because she didn’t want it. It was really fun looking out the window trying to guess which one was the airport, part of me wasn’t actually looking forward to the landing on behalf on Felix because last time we landed in Auckland it didn’t really end well.

6.00 at night.
This time it was actually much, much worse for Felix because he threw up and after he just lay there blocking his ears. My mum explained to me that, something that I didn’t get (I thought something to do with me being immune to dizziness) was that apparently going down was very painful because of something to do with pressure. I didn’t really get it which is why I’m not explaining all the details about landing.

About 8.00.
We had landed safely and everyone was feeling better now so we went out of the airport and that was when the heat hit me, I never realised how hot it would be because in the airport it was all air conditioned but anyway we met up with a taxi driver who took us all to our destination, no not a hotel a hostel which was on top of a bar so they were really loud.

Ten minutes later.
We had got shown to our rooms and I crashed as soon as I got to bed (even though it was really hard but that didn’t bother me because I was too tired). Nothing woke me up that night apart from my mum a few times but only for a few seconds.

My Calendar Art.

Recently we have been doing calendar art, there were six options: The Black and White Coloured Bird, The Hot and Cold Hands, The Texture Landscape, Primary and Secondary Coloured Hands, Sea Turtles and The Maori Animal Myth Art. I chose The Texture Landscape, this is what it looks like:

Pretty much what we had to do with this was create a landscape, use different coloured felts and make a different pattern on each different thing. I hope you like it. The part I found challenging was probably thinking of a new pattern each time and keeping everything neat, the part I found enjoyable was pretty much the whole thing because I loved creating patterns (even though it was hard) and using all my favourite colours.

My Character Piece About Smokey (My Dog).

We were learning to give the reader a vivid picture of what we were writing about.
This is my one, I'm really proud of it:

Smokey the Dog.
My dog Smokey is THE best dog you could ever have…

He has glinting, innocent looking, brown eyes and brown fur. As he has large teeth he can crunch on bones and squeaky toys every day. His tail is really long and my mum says it’s like a rat’s tail.  I like his ears, they are really funny, the way they flop up and down every time he runs. He can be a bit crazy sometimes like when he jumps on my bed or on the carpet and rolls around like a mad pig taking rolling in the mud to the extreme.

Smokey is really fast and active and needs walks at least every second day, so sometimes I play with him outside like jumping on the trampoline with him (he only kind of jumps though). Sometimes, he’s a bit stupid, although he can be clever when he wants to, like when he goes swimming in the river he chases the ducks and then they fly away so he tries to fly away too! (Really silly!) His favourite foods are cheese and puppy food (he isn’t really a puppy anymore though). He also likes to eat almost anything us humans eat only not grapes because when I give him one he puts it in his mouth, spits it out and walks away deciding that it’s gross.

Smokey ABSOLUTELY LOVES water, whenever he sees water, about five seconds later (maybe less) he’ll be in there but for some reason he does NOT like hoses.

Apart from swimming, annoying Ollie, my cat AND licking faces, his favourite thing to do is ripping apart squeaky toys! Believe it or not if you give him a brand new squeaky toy give him five minutes and you will see torn up toy limbs all over the place (this really frustrates my mum).

Sometimes, well practically every night, my dog takes the risk of being told off and sleeps on my bed. Instead of sleeping on his own bed or his own chair (that he claimed) he decides he likes my bed the best so every night when I go to bed I’m sure I’ll find him there.

And that’s why my dog is THE best dog you could have in the world (make that the whole universe)!

My Fun Run Reflection.

We did a fun run a while ago and this is my reflection on it. (The video is not that good).
Working with your learning buddy, answer these questions

  • In the fun run I competed in Yr 6 Girls Fun run.

  • I showed Parkvale Pride because I didn’t stop running.

  • Someone else I noticed in the fun run was Ruby because I saw that she had pushed herself and used pride.

Next, you need to pair up with another set of learning buddies. One set of learning buddies is going to have an interview with one person being the interviewee and the other being the interviewer asking questions about the fun run. The other learning buddy team will be filming the interview.

Interview Script:
Interviewer: Hello everyone, Parkvale school has just had a fun run and we have … here to answer some questions…
Now for the questions…
What run did you compete in?
How did you show Pride?
Who else did you notice showing pride, and how?
End
Thankyou … for answering these questions. See you again next time.

Place the link in this document and put it on the tracking sheet! The teachers are looking forward to seeing the creativeness you can come up with.

My Art

We have an art exhibition coming up and we all had to create our own art. Mine is an owl that is made of buttons and fluffy feathers, here is a picture of it finished:

I also made this word art thing on a website of an owl with describing words, describing my owl.
I think my art represents me because I am fond of all those bits and bobs like buttons and feathers and everything, I find that this represents me also because I am kind of nocturnal like an owl and that green is my favourite colour.

My Art Plan

Write a list of materials you will need.
If a material is not in the classroom, include how you will get it.
  • A3 piece of paper,
  • Hot Glue Gun,
  • Variety of shades of Green buttons,
  • Fluffy light Turquoise material,
  • Flower shaped green buttons,
  • Star shaped Yellow buttons,
  • Brown regular buttons of different shades,
  • Triangular orange button,
  • Two Large identical white buttons
  • Two black identical buttons
  • Pencil
Choice items
  • Permanent Marker (Black),
Wite out/Twink. Write a list of steps to take. How to make your owl.
  1. Get your A3 piece of paper and lightly draw the basic shape of the owl.
  2. Underneath the owl, draw the branch that it’s sitting on.
  3. Get your hot glue gun and turn it on to get ready to glue.
  4. Get your different shades of green buttons and glue them on the owl in layers. (Make sure to leave out the stomach).
  5. Do the same with the different shades of brown buttons on the branch.
  6. Wait for all the glue to dry before proceeding.
  7. When the glue has dried, get your turquoise material and cut it to the right shape so it fits in the gap where the stomach is.
  8. Now, glue the turquoise material on the stomach.
  9. Next get the green flower buttons that we will use as leaves, glue them on around the branch as well, Use as many ‘leaves’ as you like.
  10. For the eyes, you need to use your big white buttons. Find a place in between the stomach and the head (about, around the wings somewhere) do not glue it on until you know that it looks good.
  11. Get the star shaped buttons and glue them in between the branch and the owl.
Before doing this step look down below. Here is where your black buttons come in, find the middle of the white buttons and glue them there. Extra Instructions for the eyes.
